Waste management - an unsolved problem for Kiev and UkraineSince independence, the amount of waste produced by city inhabitants has dramatically increased. This is the backside of a "progress" that is (also) linked to increasing import of western products and technologies. Unlike other mainly western countries, Ukraine has not yet adopted a sustainable waste policy for the coming future. The main principle of a sustainable development in this sphere is avoidance of waste and reuse of materials. A map layer has been prepared to provide an overview on the location of landfills in and around Kiev ( http://goo.gl/maps/Bl2X ) An impressive and interactive presentation of waste (and some other problems) with photos from Chris Jordan, USA, you can download here

The waste related web pages focus on sustainable waste management. As an example, the German model will be shortly presented. Other article focus on waste incineration because this has special importance for Kiev.
Persistent organic pollutants are released into the environment through various pathways. This is also a waste related problem we should know about. More articles will follow.

Scientific papers dealing with all aspects of waste management are presented every year at a conference organised by EcoInform, National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute", url:
