The state of Kiev City surface waters

Beside the Dnepr, Kiev has many surface waters as lakes, ponds, channels and small rivers. Many (most?) of them are polluted with inorganic substances as heavy metals, salt and sand washed out from the streets and parks and organic compounds as oil products and chlororganic compounds. A bigger part of pollutants is related to automobile traffic.

Waste that is thrown away by people is going to be another problem that is visible in increasing quantity.

The chemical pollution has an impact on the biological state of the waters. Another impact is given by the fact that many river reaches have been converted into concrete channels or even deposed underground.

All these problems are explained in articles and made visible on theme specific maps. A few of the Kiev City Rivers can be viewed on the photos below as Dnepr, Sirtez, Darnitza and Libyd; not shown are Nivka and Vita and a few very small brooks and tributaries.
